snapping sunflowers

rise above fence
planks
how do they
sense the wind
of bells the finches in
the fig tree or the distance
of his smoky longing
hands combing red
wet hair
the roots of
the grass reaching
for darker nurturing stars
or the loneliness of
cats walking
through halls as children
dream of snapping
sunflowers in
the cloud-drenched
fields of their lost
summer days
